CLASSFICATION:

Computer are classfied on the basis of size , speed , processing power and size. However classfication of computer is not very straight forward. The distinction between these cetogories is sometimes not very clear. Some characteristics overlap different categories. Computers can be classfied as follows:

  • Personal computer
  • Mobile devices
  • Minicomputer
  • Mainframe computer
  • Supercomputer
  • Embeded computer

EXPLAIN:

PERSONAL COMPUTER:

Personal compter is designed to be used by one person at a time. It consists of a processor , memory and one or more input, output and storage devices. It also often contains a communication device. Personal computers are available in different sizes and shapes. Personal computers are commomly used in business at home and other fields of life.
Major types of personal computer are desktop computer portable computers.

MOBILE DEVICES:

A mobile device is a computing device designed to hold in the hand. Mobile devices typically have small screens and some more of them have keyboards. Mobile devices usually have no disk drives. The programs and data are permanently stored on special memory or on a small storage media such as smart card. Mobile devices  can be connected to large network to exchange data.

MINICOMPUTER:

Minicomputer is typically larger, more powerful and more experience than personal computer. Minicomputer can serve up to several hundreds connected users at the same time. It can be used in networked environment as server computer.It is also called MID RANGE SERVER. It is normally accessed by users through a personal computer , thin client or a dumd terminal.  A device with a moniter and keyboard is called dumb terminal.

MAINFRAME COMPUTER:

Mainframe computer is a large computer designed to serve several thousands connected users at the same time. It is more powerful and expensive than minicomputers. These computers can store a large amounts of data , information and programs . The users access mainframe computer through personal computer , thin client or dumb terminal. Mainframe computers is also known as enterprice server OR high  eneded server.

SUPERCOMPUTERS:

Supercomputers is the fastest and the most powerful . It is the biggest in size and more expensive than any other computer. It is used to perform complex tasks. It has very large storage capacity and can store several thousands times more than data than an average desktop computers. It also consumes so much energy. The modern supercomputers consists of thousands of miniprocessors. It can process trillions of instructions in one second.

EMBEDED COMPUTERS:

An embeded computer is designed for special purposes. It works as a component in a large product. These computers are very smaller and very limited hardware. They works as a component in  a larger product. They perform various fuctions according to the requirements of the product in which they are embeded.

A computer works according to the instructions written in the software. It is also known as program . Different softwares are used to solve different problems .
